Summer Sermon Series: Women in the Hebrew Bible
“Half of the world are women. The other half are their children.”
— Efu Nyaki
Have you ever wondered how many women’s stories are included in the Bible? Not just one-off mentions of wives and daughters, but whole narratives, plot twists, lessons, and laughs?
With both halves of our world so inextricably shaped by women, then surely women inextricably shape the holy scripture. And, of course, with both halves in mind, every story centered on women can’t help but speak to men as well.
This summer, Cari and Dan take a break from the usual Revised Common Lectionary readings (RCL is a 3-year scripture cycle shared by many Christian denominations) and zoom in on some of the signature stories of women in the Hebrew Bible.
Over twelve Sundays (June 21 – September 6), we’ll walk with Eve and Sarah, Rebekah and Rachel, Leah and Shiprah/Puah. We’ll learn from Deborah, Rahab, Ruth and Esther, and pray alongside Hannah and the Witch of Endor.
Get ready to be surprised, perplexed, and deepened in your faith, as we explore these texts of matriarchs and midwives, monarchs and military leaders, madams and mediums! Who knew the Bible had all this in store?
