THE NOMINATING COMMITTEE

The Nominating Committee consists of five members elected from the congregation plus representatives from each of the church boards. Its purpose is to develop a slate of interested church members to serve on the boards and the Nominating Committee or to nominate replacements for board members when needed. The Committee meets 4 or 5 times a year, from late spring to mid fall and reaches out to all prospective nominees. Committee members at large serve a 2 year term. When nominations are being made, the following boards are considered:

THE SESSION

The Session, comprised of 18 elders, one youth elder, and the church pastors, is responsible for the mission and governance of the church. The Session has the following responsibilities: to receive new members; to lead the congregation in mission; to provide for worship, including the sacraments; to develop and supervise the educational programs; to provide for the growth of its members in ministry, witness, service and fellowship; to develop Christian stewardship; to establish the annual budget; to oversee the work of the deacons, trustees and other church organizations; and to provide for the administration and personnel of the church. The elders also have the dual responsibility of serving as part of the Hudson River Presbytery and of representing the Presbytery in the congregation. The Session normally meets the fourth Wednesday of the month (8 to 10 times per year), at 7:30 p.m. Each elder serves on a committee: Budget (joint committee with trustees), Christian Education, Fellowship and Formation, Mission and Outreach, Nominating, Personnel (joint committee with trustees), RPNS Liaison, Stewardship (joint committee with Trustees), and Worship and Music. Elders serve a 3-year term. The youth elder is to be active in the youth ministry of the church and to serve as a part of the youth ministry leadership team. Youth elders serve a 1-year term, usually beginning in January of their junior year.

THE DEACONS

The Board of Deacons has 21 deacons and two youth deacons. Each deacon has responsibility for a parish, which consists of about 25 families within the congregation. The deacons’ ministry involves: welcoming new members to the congregation and assisting them in becoming involved in the church; delivering flowers; assisting at coffee hour; supporting parish families in times of crisis such as illness or death; recognizing and celebrating joyful occasions like births, baptisms, and weddings; planning and coordinating new member desserts, the fall picnic, and special events; meeting special needs such as assisting home-bound church members; assisting a pastor in taking communion to those who are unable to attend church. Deacons normally meet the second Wednesday of the month (10 times per year) at 7:30 p.m. Deacons serve a 3-year term. Youth deacons serve a 1-year term, beginning in January of junior (or sophomore) year, and are to be active in the youth ministry of the church and on its leadership team.

THE TRUSTEES

The 15 trustees are responsible for managing the property and all finances of the church, subject to the authority of the Session. They report regularly to the Session on all matters committed to them, including financial statements and a report of their proceedings. The trustees normally meet the fourth Tuesday of the month (10 times per year) at 7:30 p.m. Each trustee serves on a committee: Budget (joint committee with Session), Buildings and Grounds, Insurance, Investment, Legal/Audit, Nominating, Personnel (joint committee with Session), and Stewardship (joint committee with Session). Trustees serve a 3-year term.
